Last week the children were treated to a visit from a saxophone ensemble from the University of Nottingham. The university students introduced the different types of saxophone before playing a few pieces including music from "The Looney Tunes" and "The Teddy Bear's Picnic". The children got involved, clapping along to the music and asking questions about the instruments.

Cross Country News

It was the second round of the Nottinghamshire Schools' Cross Country on Saturday 19th November and the team from Round Hill were looking forward to continuing our successful season of running. In challenging frosty conditions, Rosie continued her unbeaten record in the girls Year 5/6 race whilst Daisy also secured her third top ten position of the year. Ciara rounded off the top three scorers for the girl’s team with a creditable 19th place. We also had more boys there for this race with the top finishers being the two Toms who achieved 8th and 13th respectively. The girls' team now lies in 2nd place with one race remaining whilst Rosie is in a commanding position for individual honours. Well done to everyone who took part in what were very tricky conditions and thanks to all those who came along and supported us! Full results will be posted on the school website.

attendance Matters

Attendance at Round Hill is definitely one of our strengths and we are in the top percentile nationally for our attendance figures, however we have noticed that we do have a small number of children who are persistently absent.

In order for your children to take advantage of all the opportunities that Round Hill has to offer both academically and otherwise, it is important that your child attends as regularly as possible.

Please help us to achieve this by only keeping your child at home if they really are too ill to attend and not booking holidays during term time which will be recorded as unauthorised.

We have always had ‘graduated response’ with regard to attendance, but you will notice that if your child’s attendance now drops below 90% you will receive a text notifying you of this every week until it rises above 90% again to ensure that you are aware it has dipped below this level.   If your child’s attendance drops below 85% you will be asked to attend a meeting at school to discuss the reasons for the absence and ways in which we can support your child’s attendance and discuss any specific issues.

You need to be aware that we may have to consider further measures such as a referral to targeted support or fines may have to be issued to families who take their children out of school where attendance has already fallen below a certain level.

Reminder - Applications for Leave of Absence

As you are no doubt aware head teachers are not allowed to grant any leave of absence for holidays during term time unless there are “exceptional circumstances”.

Please read the following information on the school website first before considering taking your child out of school. Click here.

If you have any questions about the above information then please call into school, we will be happy to speak to parents to discuss individual circumstances.

Coat Hanger Donations Please?

Mrs Harrod is organising the school dressing up cupboards which is a mammoth task and she is in need of an endless supply of coat hangers. If anyone can help can you please get in touch.

Adults Needed - Choir

Following such success in the summer the Round Hill Mixed Choir is again looking for some enthusiastic adult volunteers to join us for one piece at the Christmas concert – Wednesday 14th December 4pm.  Any parents, staff or Governors who are keen to sing are welcome to join us - no extensive experience required just a willingness to get stuck in! If you could email the office on office@roundhill.notts.sch.uk if you are interested and we’ll arrange a rehearsal prior to the concert.  A recording and sheet music will also soon be available on the school website in the choir section under the ‘Our Learning’ heading.

Parent Fourm feedback

At the Autumn Term Parents’ Forum meeting back in October I promised to update parents and send reminders out to parents of a number of related issues.

PE Kit – please make sure you send your child into school with the correct named PE Kit:

  • Black shorts and white t-shirt
  • For outdoor games in cold weather - sweatshirt, jogging bottoms or tracksuit
  • Plimsolls or trainers.

Children need to bring in their own PE kit and will not be asked share their kit with other children.  We have spare kit in school for that very purpose.

Curriculum Matters – several parents have asked for further information about the National Curriculum which was new in 2014 and about our own curriculum.  We have updated the curriculum pages on the school website which contain a curriculum map for each phase and a wealth of other resources that are available and explain what we teach, how and when.  We hope you find them useful.

Pokémon and other Sports Cards – to clarify the school position I have been asked to point out that unless there is a specific reason the above cards should not be brought into school.

Club Information is in the process of being updated.

Marking policy/Homework – Miss Hewitt and the staff have spent the last few weeks updating the school marking policy which will be on the school website soon. The homework policy is also on the school website and can be found here.  This should address all the things we discussed in the meeting.

The Daily Mile – We are still doing the daily mile but sadly due to the British weather and other circumstances beyond our control we find it difficult to do every day.  We still believe whole heartedly in this form of exercise and we will continue to fit it in when we can.  This podcast (kindly sent to me by Natalie Hardwicke, is a good reminder of why we are all keen to get involved.

Maths No Problem – this is our new scheme and is really beginning to have a positive impact in school.  If you would like to find out about how we teach mathematics in school then let us know and we can organise a curriculum evening.

Yours sincerely,
