Curriculum at Round Hill

My name is Stacey Yates, I am the senior leader in charge of leading the curriculum across school.  I have taught across both KS1 and KS2 and love to find new and exciting ways of bring all the subjects that Primary School offers to the classroom for children to enjoy and flourish.

Here at Round Hill we tailor our lessons to meet the needs and interests of our children to enable each individual to grow and develop their own curious minds and talents.  We offer a broad curriculum with many extra-curricular activities for children to enjoy and excel in.  We are particularly proud of the variety of musical instrument and sporting opportunities available to our children.

Our classroom practise is based around Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction* using at daily reviews, high quality models, teacher/ student guided practise leading onto independent practise by students.  More information can be found in out Teaching and Learning Policy below.

For more information, please find below our (subject) Policy, Scheme of Work and the Progression Map.

Curriculum Intent

At Round Hill Primary the uniqueness of every child is recognised and valued. As such, our curriculum embraces the community, from which it exists, recognising and celebrating the diverse backgrounds and experiences from which our children originate. We constantly adapt our learning journey to meet the needs and interests of our children, offering an excellent education underpinned by a broad, culturally rich and exciting curriculum to ensure that all pupils are well equipped for the next stages in their education.

Our curriculum is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values however, creativity is important to us here at Round Hill. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and to celebrate and develop the individual talents of our pupils, recognising everyone as unique with their own ambitions, skills and dreams. We aim to provide an environment that encourages lifelong learning.

Children leave Round Hill with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to work with others, make decisions, be reflective, make connections and become lifelong learners.

Curriculum Implementation

Skills and knowledge are taught discreetly in subject areas so that our children gain a broad understanding of each subject and know exactly which subject they are studying. However, the curriculum is designed to embed transferable skills throughout, without weakening essential skills based learning. Teachers work on an A/B cycle and plan a series of lessons using schemes of work and their own understanding of children’s starting points, ensuring careful consideration for revisiting knowledge, progression and depth. Teachers use knowledge organisers which outline the key knowledge, skills and vocabulary all children must master and learn.

At Round Hill Primary School, we also recognise the importance of feedback, both adult and peer, as an integral part of the teaching and learning cycle, and aim to maximise the effectiveness of its use in practice. We are mindful also of the research surrounding effective feedback and research from cognitive science regarding the fragility of new learning. In response to this, planning is flexible and responsive to pupils’ needs.

We create a happy, friendly, stimulating working atmosphere, where we place great importance on trips, workshops, clubs and other exciting opportunities to develop children’s cultural capital and to ensure learning comes to life!

Curriculum Plan

The Curriculum Plan shows an overview of how our curriculum meets our school values and vision.

*Rosenshine's principle emphasises the importance of giving students sufficient time to practise retrieval, ask questions, and get the desired help. Students must not stop after learning the information once, they must continue to rehearse it by summarising, analysing, or applying their knowledge.
