PURPOSE OF THIS BROCHURE

 

Welcome to Round Hill Primary School. This brochure aims to give you the basic information you need about school. If, having read the brochure, you would like more information or would like to talk to us personally, please contact us. New parents are always welcome to visit. Please telephone to make an appointment.

 

WELCOME TO ROUND HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL

 

Making the right choice of school for our children is one of the most important decisions we have to make as parents. This prospectus invites you to join us in looking at the opportunities that Round Hill Primary School has to offer your family. In conjunction with a visit to the school, we hope to give you a clear idea of the kind of school we are and the quality of education we provide. Thank you for taking time to find out about us.

 

A SCHOOL TO BE PROUD OF

 

I believe children learn better when they are excited and engaged – but what excites and engages them most is truly excellent teaching, which challenges them and promotes independence in learning. When there is joy in what children are doing, they ‘learn to love learning’.

 

The school is rightly proud of its track record in teaching the core curriculum and offers children a superb range of creative opportunities.   Whilst it is vitally important for children to be both numerate and literate, they will also need to be flexible, and able to work confidently with changing technology. Children will require excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.  Our key educational aim is to encourage each child to work to his or her potential. I believe class work should be relevant, valued by the child, very challenging with built-in rigour.  If children are to progress in tomorrow’s world they will need to be independent from an early age.  It is vital children develop the skills and strategies of how to learn rather than the habit of being taught; starting in the Foundation Unit by learning through play based self-initiated activities right though to creative research projects in Year 6. 

If you hear your child use the words ‘this is the best school in the world’ it is because that is the message I want to spread.

 

Along with the staff, governors and pupils, I intend to make Round Hill an outstanding school.  Success in most ventures requires vision, determination and teamwork. The staff team is determined to get the right balance between traditional values with the demands of a rapidly changing world.  I am passionate about making Round Hill into an even better school and determined to offer your child a high quality education and to ensure your child reaches their full potential.

ORGANISATION

 

The number of pupils in school is growing.  As from September 2014 the school admits 75 children into three classes of 25 in the Foundation Unit.  Other year groups have 60 pupils but eventually all classes will have 75 children.  All the classes are of mixed ability. Within each class, work is planned to develop each child's potential. Children are taught as a whole-class, in small groups and as individuals as the need arises. As there are parallel classes, teachers work together to plan the work so that children of similar ages work on similar material. Children generally spend the majority of the day with their class teacher but teachers sometimes exchange or share teaching commitments so that full use can be made of each teacher's expertise.

 

All teaching staff receive time out of the classroom for PPA (planning, preparation and assessment) work. During these sessions, the classes are covered by our specialist teaching team. These are staff employed to enhance the curriculum areas of Music, Art, Drama, PE (physical education), Dance and Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) (French). This work has been particularly successful and is a special feature of our school.

 

 

 

 

WHAT DOES THE SCHOOL OFFER MY CHILD?

 

Round Hill Primary School provides education for children between the ages of four and eleven.  We are a multi-cultural and diverse school. We welcome visits from prospective parents. Please arrange a visit by making an appointment with the school office. 

 

A friendly staff

We have a committed staff team dedicated to the successful education of our children. We encourage a continuous dialogue between home and school so that we can achieve the best for your child.

We are committed to family and school working together. We want to work in partnership with all our parents and carers and welcome parents who want to be fully involved in their children’s school career. 

 

Discipline and security

Discipline in school is important. Children need to learn from an early age to respect others and to use equipment and resources properly. Our expectations are consistent and fair. We care for all our children as individuals and encourage them to behave in ‘The Round Hill Way’. As with all areas of our work, we consider that parents need to be involved in the social aspects of their child’s education whilst they are at school.

Round Hill has been constantly updated to meet the demands of modern primary education. We continually review and adapt facilities to meet current and changing needs.

WHO ARE THE SCHOOL GOVERNORS?

 

Governors are the body who make decisions about how the school is run.

Governors help to:

             provide strategic direction for school

             monitor teaching and learning;

             assist in interviewing and selecting staff;

             set standards for behaviour, attendance and targets for attainment and achievement

             monitor the school budget;

School governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities. They can only act as a body, they cannot act individually.

 

ROUND HILL ASSOCIATION (RHA)

 

This is the school's Parents' Association which helps the school through fundraising activities and by holding social activities for parents and children. All parents automatically belong to the association and many help either by serving on the committee or by offering support at particular events. 

The association also sells book bags and P.E. bags in school colours and on which the school’s logo is printed and they also run a second-hand school clothes shop.

 

THE CREATIVE CURRICULUM

 

The Primary School years of a child’s life are the foundations on which future successes will build. Children at Round Hill follow the National Curriculum in ten subjects as well as Religious Education.

 

The Foundation Curriculum and the subjects of the National Curriculum are taught throughout the school. These include the core subjects of Mathematics, Science and English, and the other foundation subjects, ICT, History, Geography, Technology, Music, A Modern Foreign Language, Art, Dance and P.E.  Most of these are taught through cross-curricular themes, but where there is a need, a specific subject area will be taught.

 

There is an emphasis throughout the curriculum on the development of many aspects of personal and social education. 

 

As a School, we have been given additional funding this year to improve on our provision of PE and sport.

 

WHAT DO THE PUPILS LEARN?

 

The Round Hill Way promotes children’s ability to listen to and respect the opinions and beliefs of others and to be able to express oneself coherently and logically. We teach children to think for themselves in every area of the curriculum and we believe passionately in children experiencing a broad curriculum.

 

English

We want our children to love reading and be enthusiastic and skilful writers. We also teach handwriting, spelling, speaking and listening. We have a well-developed home/school reading policy that involves parents in helping their children.

 

Mathematics

Attainment in mathematics is very good at Round Hill. We teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and the division of numbers, practical problem solving and investigations, using the calculator and shape, space and measures.

 

Science

Children at Round Hill love science! They learn about the world around them including environmental and physical sciences as well as health education.

 

History, Geography and Religious Education

We learn about the past, the natural and man-made environment, and about Christian traditions and other world faiths. Round Hill is an ‘Eco School’ reflecting the importance we give to children understanding about the environment.

 

Technology and Computing

Designing and making; control technology and information technology. We have excellent provision for information and communications technology. Our computer systems are equipped with the latest hardware and software. All children in school make regular and timetabled use of the mobile laptop suite and internet.

 

The Arts

Children enjoy painting, sketching and model-making.  Dance and drama are enjoyed throughout the year but celebrated in excellent annual productions for parents.

 

Music

Music is a strength of the school. Singing, making and composing music and learning to listen to and appreciate music are all taught.

In Year 3 we offer instrumental lessons in addition.  Large numbers of children receive tuition in woodwind, brass instrument, guitar and violin. Tuition is provided by the County's Arts Support service and parents contribute to the cost of the lessons and hire of the instruments.  

As children become more proficient in their instruments they are encouraged to join our wonderful orchestra.

 

Physical Education

Children at Round Hill enjoy Physical Education and we believe access to sport is very important. We aim to meet the wide sporting interests of our children.  They take part in competitive football and athletics competitions.   Children will have access to gymnastics, apparatus skills, games, orienteering, cricket and team games. All children in year 3 and 5 have access to school swimming.

 

Is Religious Education provided by the school?

Schools must provide religious education for all children.  We aim to educate children to become useful members of a multi-cultural, multi-faith society. Our religious education, therefore, aims to nurture an understanding of the major world religions in addition to developing understandings of Christianity.  Religious education is taught according to the Nottinghamshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. The school will make arrangements for parents to exercise their rights in accordance with Section 9 of the 1988 Education Act, in relation to pupil’s attendance at religious worship or instruction.

The school is not affiliated with a particular religious denomination. Daily assemblies are held which include an informal ‘act of worship’. Parents may choose to withdraw their children from assembly.

 

Is Sex Education provided by the school?

Sex education is offered as an integrated element of the Health Education Programme delivered at a time appropriate to the developmental stage of the children. As you would expect, parents are kept fully informed about the teaching of this important subject.

 

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

These vary from term to term and the children and parents are informed when activities are changed.

Many of these clubs compete with other schools locally or nationally. The performing arts clubs perform frequently to a range of audiences.

 

HOW WILL YOU MEET MY CHILD INDIVIDUAL NEEDS?

 

Round Hill is an ‘Achievement for All’ School.  The Headteacher and the Inclusion Manager deal with all of the aspects of Special Educational Needs within school.  Assessment plays a vital part in your child’s education at Round Hill. Children are assessed and monitored on a regular basis and targets for achievement are then set for each individual child in reading, writing and numbers. These targets are discussed with children, their parents and reviewed with parents at our regular parent and teacher meetings.

At school we have disabled facilities which include a lift, a shower, disabled toilet and our entrances and exits have ramps.

 

Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE)

In the school grounds we have two areas that have been developed for environmental studies. At the front, a garden area has been set up using grants from Broxtowe Borough Council. At the back of the school we have a large conservation area. Trees, bulbs, and wild flowers have been planted by children, staff and parents.  On the playground we have some seats and a new Trim Trail provided by the school with support from the Parents’ Association (rha) and Roundabout (after school club).  Next door to the school is Beeston Library which all classes in the school visit regularly.

 

ARE PUPILS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULITES HELPED?

 

Every child is different - they look different, develop at different times and at different rates. They learn in different ways so we assess their needs as individuals. Pupils are continually assessed by staff and special provision can be arranged if necessary. The curriculum may be modified or extended to cater for identified needs; allowing children to work individually or in small groups.  The strong partnership we encourage between family and school becomes particularly important in effectively meeting the needs of children with special needs. Our special educational needs policy is available to read upon request and on the school website.

 

Do the children do homework?

From starting school we encourage parents to support and help their child at home. This may be by reading together or by finding out information. As the children become older they will be encouraged to become independent in their learning and are asked to extend their interest by taking work home.

 

How do you care for the children at school?

All the children are in the care of the Head Teacher throughout the day. The class teacher is responsible for the daily welfare and happiness of their class group. Midday Supervisors come into school at lunchtime to care for the children under the direction of the Head Teacher. The whole staff team have a responsibility to provide security and a happy working environment.

 

School Nurse

The school nurse makes regular visit to school. They are based at Dovecote House – Wollaton Road Beeston NG9 2NR. 

 

First Aid

Our qualified first aiders look after the physical well-being of the children.  If your child has an accident at school we will treat minor injuries and keep you informed.

 

Will my child be safe during the school day?

We take security very seriously. The perimeter fence is securely locked during the school day. The only access is through the main entrance door which is alarmed and supervised by school staff.

We do all we can to keep your child safe - no child is allowed to leave the premises alone during the day. They may leave with a responsible adult after written permission from the parents has been received in school.

 

CHILD PROTECTION - CHILDREN AT RISK

 

Every school in Nottinghamshire is required to follow a set procedure in cases of suspected child abuse. Head Teachers are required to refer their concerns to the Social Services Department for further investigation so that children at risk can be identified quickly. This procedure is intended to protect children from abuse.  When a school refers a concern about a pupil to the Social Services Department, it is not accusing the parents of abuse, but requesting that further investigation takes place to establish whether a child is at risk.  The head teacher is the senior designated Child Protection Officer and the Inclusion Manager is also a Child Protection Officer.

 

Safeguarding Statement

This is taken from our Safeguarding Policy:

At Round Hill Primary School, the health, safety and well-being of every child is of paramount importance. We listen to our pupils and take seriously what they tell us. Our aim is that children will enjoy their time as pupils in this school.

We want to work in partnership with parents to help children achieve their full potential and make a positive contribution.

On rare occasions our concern about a child may mean that we have to consult other agencies even before we contact parents. The procedures, which we follow, have been laid down by the Nottinghamshire Safeguarding Children Board, and the school has adopted a Child Protection Policy in line with this for the safety of all.

 

DOES THE SCHOOL BELIEVE IN DISCIPLINE?

 

Our answer is firmly - yes! The governors, staff and parents share the responsibility for a high standard of discipline in school. We strive to maintain a happy and harmonious school, where we live and work together in pleasant surroundings. We train our children to respect themselves and other people as well as the world around them. The class teacher is concerned not only for the educational progress but also for the personal and social development of your child. We try to combine high expectations with a sympathetic approach. Sometimes however, problems do crop up and we involve parents at an early stage. We hope that you, as parents will do the same with us. Any small upset can cause your child to behave differently at school just as worry over school work or disagreement with a friend can cause problems at home. We believe that excellent attendance and punctuality are important and these are actively encouraged.

School rules are made for the safety of children and to ensure that they show consideration for others and care for their surroundings. Further details may be found in the ‘Home School Agreement’. We try to create a happy atmosphere in which to work. The children are encouraged to work hard and to aim at a high standard of presentation. They are expected to be well mannered and tidy in their personal appearance. The school has a ‘Behaviour Policy’ which provides positive encouragement for good behaviour.

 

WHAT OTHER CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT IS OFFERED?

 

Each class take visits away from the school site on a regular basis.  Although school subsidises these visits, parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost. Children in year 2, 4 and 6 have the chance to take part in residential visits.  All visits are organised within the procedures set out by Nottinghamshire County Council. 

 

Many outside visitors and artists are invited to the school to offer their expertise or knowledge. We occasionally have ’Themed Days/Weeks’ where children are involved in exciting cross curricular opportunities.

 

CHARGING AND REMISSIONS POLICY

 

The Governors’ Charging and Remissions Policy allows for a remission of charges for children who are in receipt of free school meals and others whose families have a low income. The Policy reflects the County Guidelines and can be seen by arrangement with the Head Teacher.

HOME SCHOOL PLANNER

 

All children are provided with a home school planner to help develop communication between home, school and the pupil.  It is used to record daily progress and homework but also as a way to pass messages from home to school.

 

 

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE?

 

Although not affiliated with the school, ‘Roundabout’ provides child care from 7.45am to 8.50am and again from 3.30pm to 6.00pm each day. We do not recommend young children being placed in both clubs - the day is too long for them.

 

SCHOOL MEALS AS YOU NEVER REMEMBERED THEM!

We have our own kitchen on site which uses local vegetables and meat to produce healthy, mouth-watering choices to meet all tastes at a competitive price!

 

SCHOOL COUNCIL

 

How are children involved in school?

Giving our pupils a voice is very important to us and they are involved in all of our work. The School Council is made up of elected representatives from years 2 to 6.  We plan to introduce a termly newspaper which keeps children and parents up to date with the work they are doing.  

 

PARENT ASSOCIATION

 

How can I become involved with the school as a parent?

Parents get many opportunities to become involved at Round Hill. You are always welcome to join us in school. We encourage our parents to spend time in school with their child, enabling them to see the school at work and the tasks expected of their children. We greatly appreciate any free time you are able to offer helping in the school. Without your help school swimming and our visits to places of interest could never happen. The school has an active Parent Teacher Association called the Round Hill Association (rha) which organises a wide variety of social and fund raising activities.

We hold regular meetings with individual parents/carers to discuss progress and parents are encouraged to come to discuss any difficulties which may arise. Any parent may come to discuss their child with the staff at a mutually convenient time. Please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance.

 

In Partnership

We invite parents to consultation meetings once per term and hold open assemblies to which parents are invited.  We produce regular newsletters to keep you in touch with the activities that are taking place in school and our website is regularly updated accordingly. 

 

STANDARD RECEPTION  ADMISSION CRITERIA (TO FULL TIME EDUCATION)

 

Children are admitted to school at a single point of entry at the beginning of September in the academic year in which they turn 5.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

 

The following groups of children will be given special consideration in their application for a particular school:

 

             Children in Public Care (whose application will be agreed);

 

             Children whose particular medical needs, mobility support needs, special educational needs or social circumstances are supported by written evidence from a doctor, social worker or other relevant professional stating that the school is the only school which could cater for the child’s particular needs. The evidence must be presented at the time of application.

 

The Local Education Officer will consider each case on its merits and determine the allocation of any such place by comparing the written evidence presented along with the capacity of the school to cater for the identified needs. In order to make an assessment of the case, reference will be made to the head teacher and other relevant professionals. Cases agreed under ‘special circumstances’ will take precedence over all of the numbered criteria.

 

Children of nomadic travellers will be allocated a place at their catchment area school. 

 

ADMISSIONS TO YEAR GROUPS OTHER THAN THE INTAKE YEAR.

 

Applications for admission to other year groups will normally be considered in relation to the published admission number (PAN) which applied when the year group was first admitted to the school, subject to infant class size restrictions. If places are available within the year group, applications will be considered in accordance with the above admission criteria. If places are available, the child will normally be admitted to the school.

 PRE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS (CHILDREN AGED BETWEEN 4 AND 5)

 

The Foundation Unit at Round Hill School provides for children to have part-time education in the term following their fourth birthday. Part-time provision is for 15 hours and admission is determined by taking up all 15 hours. Allocation of part-time places is managed by the school. It must be remembered that a part-time place does not guarantee a full time place.  There is a separate procedure which must be adhered to as the Local Authority is wholly responsible for full time admissions and not the school. Parents MUST register their child at the Area Education Office 01623 433499.

 

Pre-School Children will be admitted to Pre- school as follows.

 

Children with date of birth between 01.09.2014 – 31.12.2014 will be admitted the first day of the Spring Term 2019. (i.e. January 2019)

 

If there are spaces available children with birthdays between 01.01.2015 - 31.03.2015 will be admitted on the first day of the Summer Term 2019. (i.e. April 2019)

 

A meeting will be held for parents in the term before children are due to begin the Foundation Unit to discuss admission arrangements for them.

       

 

 

 

 

PEARSON CENTRE

 

The building next to school is called The Pearson Centre.  We are able to use it to enhance our facilities by timetabled access. The facilities include:

A National Standard Sports Hall,

Computer Suite,

Children’s Gym and Dance area and a

Music room and recording studio.

 

MEDICINES

 

The consent of the Head Teacher must be obtained before any medications prescribed by a doctor can be administered in school. 

The school’s policy is that medicines required to be taken on a three-times-per-day basis should be given before school, after school and at bedtime. Any medical issues which fall outside these guidelines must be discussed with the Head Teacher.

Children using asthma inhalers must have an inhaler (clearly labeled with their name on it) at school at all times and be trained to use them.

UNAUTHORISED  ABSENCES

 

Regular attendance at school is a shared responsibility of parents, schools and the Local Authority. It is quite clear that unauthorised absences cannot be tolerated and that all parties should work together to ensure regular attendance at school. 

 

The Government has made amendments to the Education Regulations 2006 to begin 1st September 2013, promoting good attendance and reducing absences, including persistent absences.  It states that headteachers may not grant any leave of absence for holidays during term time unless there are “exceptional circumstances”. Therefore I shall not be able to approve any requests for:-

 

•             Availability of cheap holidays and cheap travel arrangements

•             Days overlapping with beginning or end of term

 

The following lists give an indication about what may constitute an authorised, or an unauthorised absence.

First Day Absence Reporting – Children who are not at school. 

If your child is ill and going to be absent from school, can you please telephone before 10 O’clock, on the first day of absence, to let us know. (0115 9179262) We may call you if we have not heard from you to ensure your child is safe.  (There is no need to write a note if you have made a call)

 

COMPLAINTS

 

There is an agreed procedure for dealing with any complaints regarding the curriculum or other related issues. A full copy of the procedure is available at school or on the school website, but initially there should be an informal discussion with the Head Teacher to see if the matter can be resolved without resorting to formal hearings. Failing this, it should be reported in writing to the Chair of the Governing Body.  The Head Teacher would be able to provide the complainant with copies of relevant documents.
