Jon Duncan – LA Governor

Term of office from 26 Apr 2022 to 25 Apr 2026

I came to Nottingham as a student in 1980, have lived close to the school since 1990, and have always appreciated the role that Round Hill plays in the life of the local community.  For 6 years until 2012 I was manager for an age-group at Beeston Centurions youth football club. When the team members were at primary school age, we were grateful for the use of the school playing field on Sunday mornings – even in the depths of winter!

After leaving university I qualified as a Chartered Accountant, working in public practice, and then in various East Midland businesses before retiring from my last position in February 2019. I previously served on the governing body from 2004 to 2009,  covering some time when my children were pupils at the school, and then for a couple of years after they moved on to secondary school.    I hope to bring some of my finance & business management experience to the governing body at this challenging time.

Currently I am treasurer of the Wollaton Road allotments association, where I have a plot growing vegetables and fruit, while at home I am working to improve my bread-making. .”

Helen Fielding – (Vice Chair of Governors) Co-opted Governor

Term of office from 14 Jan 2024 to 13 Jan 2028
First appointed on 14 Jan 2020

I have lived in Beeston for  over 40 years and as I am now retired I wanted to volunteer in my local community. I was a primary school teacher in Nottinghamshire for 20 years. I then worked  in  primary teacher training, specialising in the teaching of mathematics. This gave me the opportunity to supervise  school placements for trainee teachers in a variety of schools. I learnt a great deal from working with a wide range of teachers, students and children each year.  I joined the Round Hill Governor team in January 2020.  I hope to use my experience to support the staff, children and parents of Round Hill school, through my Co-opted Governor role.

Morag Duffin – Coopted Governor

Term of office from 12 Jul 2022 to 11 Jul 2026

I joined the governing body in September 2022 as a co-opted governor, at the same time that my son started in Foundation. I have broad experience within education: I qualified as a secondary school teacher and then moved into higher education, focusing on access and participation for students from underrepresented backgrounds. I also have 8 years of experience as a governor at another primary school in Nottingham. In particular, I hope to bring my experience of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion to the school community.

Ian Culshaw – Parent Governor

My daughter has just started in foundation, and I have been elected as a representative parent for Round Hill School. I will be committed to the school’s continuous improvement for the benefit of all children who attend, and helping to keep the school accountable for deviating from the ethos’ that it has
already established whilst pushing for higher inclusivity wherever possible.

Professionally, I am a Software Engineer responsible for leading a team and alignment of the technical direction of the company.

Ruth Brown – Co-opted Governor

26 Apr 2022 to 25 Apr 2026

I became a governor in 2022. I have 3 children one of whom has finished at Round Hill and the other 2 still still attend here. I am keen that school is a safe and supportive environment for all children and that the staff are looked after very well.  Until recently my working life has involved working closely with families, this experience has helped me in my role as a governor.  I am now exploring my childhood dream as I pursue becoming a baker!!

Governor Vacancies

Vacancies 1 and 2

Round Hill governing body has two vacancies for parent governors and is looking for parents who have children at the school.

Vacancy 3

We also have one vacancy for a Co-opted Governor. (Information coming soon.)

If you are interested in applying to join the governors, we would love to hear from you.  See the letters for how to apply.

What is a governor?

Governors play a vital role in shaping the education of young people by helping to set the ethos, vision and strategy for schools. School governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education. Governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and have an important part to  play in the effectiveness of a school.

Who are we looking for?

We are interested in hearing from parents or members of the community with the skills listed below. This is a co-opted role to ensure that our governing body has people who can help us to fulfil all of our duties.

What skills and experience are we looking for?

We are interested in hearing from candidates who are passionate about education, have a thoughtful and broadminded approach, are welcoming, community focused and able to bring a fresh perspective to the governing body. We are particularly interested in candidates who are analytical and interested or experienced in school finance. Candidates who have some flexibility and daytime availability are highly desired and we welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds.

Who can be a governor?

Almost anyone over 18 years of age can become a governor. There are no particular qualifications or requirements, other than a willingness to give time to the role and a capacity for working with other people. You don’t have to have previous governor experience and don’t have to be an expert in education. Governors can be parents, but don’t have to be and can also be recruited from local communities and businesses. Governors are recruited by the governing body (these are co- opted governors), or through parent elections (these are parent-governors)

Who are the Governors at Round Hill?

Round Hill Primary School currently has 12 governors on the governing body. The group is made up of teachers, parents, staff and other volunteers who work together to support and monitor the school

What support will we provide?

Training and support for new governors will be provided through regular school sessions, mentoring and on-line sources. No prior experience of governance is necessary. We can support with access costs and expenses if required.

How much time does the role take?

The full governing body meets 6 times a year and in between meetings governors may visit school a few times to meet staff, attend events and support compliance etc. We estimate each governor volunteers about 5 hours per month. This will sometimes be during daytime hours but is flexible.

What next?

If you are interested in applying to join the governors, we would love to hear from you.  See the letters for how to apply.

2024 Parent Nomination Form

2024 Parent Nomination Form WORD

Composition of the Governing Body

Round Hill School has a governing body of 18 members with representatives from 4 categories.

The categories of governor are as follows:

Parent – Parent governors are elected by members of the parent community. They must have legal parental responsibility for a child registered as a pupil at the school. If insufficient parents stand for election, the governing body can appoint parent governors.

Staff – Staff governors are elected by all staff, either teaching or support staff. The head teacher is a member of the governing body by virtue of his/her office and counts as a member of the staff category.

Local Authority – This category of governors is appointed by the Local Authority.

Co-opted – Co-opted governors are appointed by the governing body through a skills audit. Governing bodies are encouraged to recruit representatives from local businesses and charitable organisations. This category can include parents and members of staff or elected members of the LA. Appointments are made by nominations and voting by all governors at the full governing body meeting.

Governance Structure

In 2017 the Governing Body proactively engaged an External Review of Governance. Following this we decided to restructure around an assurance-centric model. We have two meetings each term. The first of which is a Strategy Meeting where we discern the strategic priorities for the term and delegate assurance work for the term. Towards the end of each term we meet for an Assurance Meeting where Governors can review the findings of Governor visits, Head Teacher and Staff reports, latest data points, any external reports etc. This creates an efficient, timely, complete view on progress through the school year.

Each Governor holds a Lead Governor Role on a particular aspect of Governance e.g. Safeguarding, Pupil Premium, SEND. This allows governors to train and specialise in an area and input into Whole board meetings.

Once a year the Lead Pay Governors meet to oversee and monitor the appraisal process for all teaching staff in line with Round Hill Appraisal Policy. To receive recommendations for staff’s yearly pay review and any exceptional pay decisions, consider these in line with Round Hill Pay Policy and agree and document any appropriate changes to pay.

Why does the school have a Governing Body?

The school has a Governing Body to ensure that it has the capacity to improve and raise overall standards.

Ofsted considers the governing body to be part of the leadership and management of the school. However governors do not manage the school. That is the job of the head teacher and management team. Governors are there to be “a critical friend” to the head teacher and the school.

How do the Governors achieve this?

The Governors achieve this by:

  • Receiving information about the school’s performance and comparing it with past performance, national averages and ‘similar schools’
  • Contributing to the school self-evaluation process
  • Establishing where the school’s strengths and weaknesses are
  • Deciding the priorities for improvement
  • Discussing and approving the school’s targets and timescales
  • Ensuring that the school has a School Improvement Plan (SIP) that sets out all the actions to be taken
  • Monitoring that implementation of the SIP, largely by receiving reports from the head teacher
  • Evaluating progress and achievements

What are the powers and duties of the Governing Body?

  • Standards – securing high standards of educational achievement
  • Targets – setting appropriate targets for pupil achievement at Key Stage 2
  • Curriculum – ensuring breadth and balance, and delivery of the National Curriculum (including Foundation Stage and RE)
  • Reporting results – reporting on assessments and examination results
  • Policies – deciding how, in broad strategic terms, the school should be run
  • Performance management – carrying out the performance management process for the head teacher
  • Finance – determining how to spend the budget allocated to the school
  • Staffing – deciding on number of staff, the pay policy and making decisions on staff pay
  • Appointments – appointing the head and deputy head teacher and other staff
  • Special Educational Needs – ensuring the governing body’s responsibilities are carried out
  • Discipline – agreeing procedures for staff conduct and discipline
  • Inspection – agreeing and monitoring the school’s Self-Evaluation Form
